Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Now back to our regular programming- Tales from the Crypt Returns with even more esoteric best of: Best solo segments within songs- Starting with Best First solo in Scarlet Begonias

My nomination for the covetted title of best first scarlet solo is 9-2-78- that one just keeps rising and rising and rising until it just goes into the vast universe-

I have a nominee for the first solo break in Franklins Tower- 11-29-80- lost in the shadow of a massive shakedown- this franklins really shocks- unexpected in that position, the song acts like it has been there for years- great first solo break

OK, since no one else will, I've got to put in a plug for my first show, 3/5/81. The Scarlet is short, but there's a moment in the second verse of the solo where Jerry's guitar becomes so liltingly sweet it's almost embarassing. That gives me thrills every time I listen. BTW, the entire Scarlet>Fire (and show) is worth checking out.

03-22-1990 is pretty damn good...

Indeed that is a fabulous Scarlet- but maybe I was unclear about what I meant- I am talking about the solo break before the last verse that leads to the big jam- if you do understand, then perhaps we finally disagree on something- I listened to yours- do you want to give that 78 a listen again?

I checked out that 78 show, it's been a long while since I gave that one a listen...I certainly will give Jerry an 'A' for effort on that first jam, a couple of "wayward" moments on the fret board, but what the hay, a really nice climax in the transition jam and there's nothing better than a "just exactly perfect" segue into Fire...you know, it's really hard to give a "best ever" solo, I will need to come back to this one after I give 05-19-1974, 10-10-1980, 02-26-1981, 10-17-1978, 12-31-1978, 05-08-1977, 10-02-1977, 03-20-1977, 10-19-1981, 04-03-1982, 05-23-1982, 07-31-1982, 06-18-1983, 04-20-1984, 03-28-1985, 12-28-1986, 07-08-1987, 03-22-1990, 09-04-1991, 05-31-1992, 10-01-1994, 10-14-1994, 05-26-1995, etc. another listen...;$

With a name like Strat, you should know your stuff around the fret board- yes a few sloppy moments- bound to happen when a musician is really stretching his creative muscles-

I will give all those other dates you gave a listen

I like the Wembley 1990 solo. Jer had the midi under control and the flute aspect really flies.

When discussing best ever versions, Dick Latvala once said "Obviously 9-2-78" about Scarlet>Fire

I remember reading that in an old discussion thread on dead.net years ago. Latvala said something to the effect of there were a few songs where he felt the best version was obvious, and he listed that 9/2/78 Scarlet, the Dew from Barton Hall in '77, a Stella from the October '78 Winterland run along with several others.

I think the only one I agreed with him on was the Dew.

This recording improves my day everytime I hear it. Subtle, beautiful, sweet, damn near perfect.
